BBMRI-ERIC, established in 2013, is a European Research Infrastructure dedicated to biobanking and biomolecular resources. Its core mission is to facilitate responsible access to high-quality biological samples, data, and biomolecular resources for researchers across Europe. The organisation operates within the health and life sciences sector, serving the biomedical research community.
The infrastructure provides several key services. Its Directory contains information about hundreds of biobanks across European countries. A Federated Platform enables privacy-preserving data queries, while ELSI services address the Ethical, Legal, and Societal Implications of biobanking. Additionally, it offers quality management support and IT services to help ensure biomolecular resources are FAIR - Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable.
BBMRI-ERIC's work spans technical domains including data privacy and federation, quality management, and FAIR data services. The organisation emphasises a multidisciplinary approach, scientific excellence, and knowledge exchange, operating through strategic partnerships to support the European research landscape.
