The Greater London Authority (GLA) is the strategic governing body for London. Established on July 3rd, 2000, following a local referendum, it implements the policies of the Mayor of London and supports the London Assembly in its oversight role. The authority is led by Mayor Sadiq Khan and operates from City Hall in Royal Docks, Newham.
The GLA's remit covers the whole of London: 32 boroughs plus the City of London, an area of 607 square miles serving over 8.5 million people. Its work spans housing, transport, environment, policing, culture, economic development, community services and strategic urban planning. The London Assembly, made up of 25 members, holds the Mayor to account and examines decisions to ensure commitments to Londoners are delivered.
Staff are organised across directorates including Good Growth, Housing and Land, and Strategy and Communications. The GLA works in partnership with Transport for London (TfL) and other partner organisations across the capital.
