Kentucky State University is a public, research-comprehensive historically black university founded in 1886 as Kentucky's first state-supported institution dedicated to educating African Americans. As a 1890 land-grant institution, it maintains research facilities including the Harold R. Benson Research and Demonstration Farm and an Aquaculture Research Center that serve communities throughout Kentucky and beyond.

The university operates four colleges: Arts and Sciences; Agriculture, Health, and Natural Resources; Business, Engineering, and Technology; and Graduate Studies. It offers 61 degree programmes across certificate, associate, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels, serving students across traditional academic disciplines as well as applied fields including agriculture, aquaculture, engineering, and technology.

Located in Frankfort, Kentucky's capital, the university combines undergraduate and graduate education with active research programmes. Its structure as a land-grant institution reflects a commitment to applied research and community engagement alongside academic instruction.
