Rosebel Gold Mines operates one of South America's largest gold mines in northern Suriname, approximately 80 kilometres south of Paramaribo. Established in 2002 as a joint venture between Cambior Inc. and Golden Star Resources Ltd., the company commenced commercial production in 2004 and has extracted approximately 5.65 million ounces of gold through 2021, averaging around 314,000 ounces annually. The operation comprises two mining areas: the primary Rosebel mining area and the Saramacca mining area, located roughly 25 kilometres southwest, which began production in the second half of 2020.
The company operates across the Brokopondo and Sipaliwini districts, with ore processed through the Rosebel processing plant. Core activities include gold extraction and processing, mineral exploration and development, mine operations, and associated functions spanning environmental management, safety management, and community relations.
Rosebel Gold Mines became a subsidiary of Zijin Mining in February 2023. Zijin Mining is one of the world's largest multinational mining groups engaged in exploration and development of copper, gold, zinc, and lithium. Under this ownership, the operation has focused on stabilising production, improving safety and environmental standards, enhancing organisational development, and strengthening community relations.
