Founded in 1853, The Clearing House is a U.S. banking association and payments company that operates critical national payments infrastructure. It is the only private-sector operator of both ACH and wire transfer systems in the United States, a role it executes through its Core ACH and Wire Operator Services. This platform processes nearly $2 trillion in U.S. dollar payments each day, accounting for half of all commercial ACH and wire volume.
The company also operates two significant clearing and settlement networks. CHIPS (Clearing House Interbank Payments System) is the largest private-sector USD clearing and settlement network globally, settling $2.2 trillion in domestic and international payments per day. The RTP (Real-Time Payments) network, launched in November 2017, was the first new core payments infrastructure in the U.S. in over 40 years, enabling instant payments 24/7/365 for transactions up to $10 million.
Beyond its operational role, The Clearing House engages with policymakers and conducts research to provide expertise and thought leadership on the evolution of payments regulation and public policy for the banking industry.
