TraPac is a container terminal operator and vessel stevedore providing port terminal services on the U.S. West Coast. Founded in 1985, the company runs two facilities: the San Pedro Bay terminal at the Port of Los Angeles, with 1.6 million TEU of cargo capacity, and a terminal at the Port of Oakland, with 650,000 TEU. The Los Angeles site was the first automated container terminal in North America. TraPac is a wholly owned subsidiary of Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL), a Japanese shipping company.
The company's engineering work spans port terminal automation, automated container handling, emissions-reduction and shore-power technology, integrated customs scanning, on-dock rail and electrified cargo handling equipment. Its fleet includes hybrid automated straddle carriers, grid-powered automated stacking cranes and Liebherr electric ship-to-shore cranes; TraPac was also the first in California to deploy automated truck handling systems, on-dock rail service and integrated customs scanning. Partners include ABB, Kuenz and Liebherr.
Operations handle Pacific Rim imports into the U.S. Midwest and Midwestern agricultural exports. The Oakland terminal handles both trade flows; the company reports a 90% reduction in emissions and 66% less vessel emissions per TEU through shore power and capture systems.
