In 1740, when most Colonial American colleges existed primarily to train young men for the Christian ministry, Benjamin Franklin envisioned something radically different. This insight compelled him to publish his famous "Proposals Relating to the Education of Youth" and organize 24 trustees to form an institution based on his revolutionary ideas. In 1751, the Academy and Charitable School in the Province of Pennsylvania opened its doors, establishing what would become America's first university.
