Amnesty International USA (AIUSA) is the American section of the global human rights movement, founded in 1961. The organisation investigates and exposes human rights abuses, works to educate and mobilise the public, and seeks to help transform societies. It operates as a democratically governed membership organisation, with members voting on key policy issues and electing the Board of Directors.
The broader Amnesty International movement spans more than 150 countries with upwards of 10 million members and activists worldwide. AIUSA itself counts more than one million members and activists across all 50 US states. To preserve its independence, the organisation accepts no funding from governments for its research and campaigning work.
