Communities Unlimited is a nonprofit Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) founded in 1976. The organisation focuses on rural community development across seven southern states: Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas.
Its work spans several interconnected areas. The Community Infrastructure programme offers managerial, technical, and financial assistance for water and wastewater systems, while the Lending division provides innovative financing for both water systems and small businesses. The organisation also runs dedicated programmes in broadband technology, helping rural communities improve digital access through education and community-driven outreach.
Beyond infrastructure, Communities Unlimited supports small business owners one-on-one through its Entrepreneurship programme and backs rural housing initiatives as part of broader community development. The Community Sustainability programme partners with local economies to build long-term viability. The organisation describes itself as equity-focused and opportunity-driven, with an emphasis on integrating technology and human connection into its approach.
