The Police Federation of England and Wales represents more than 145,000 rank-and-file police officers across England and Wales, operating as an independent staff association established by Act of Parliament in 1919. Following the police strikes after the First World War, the organisation was created to represent constables, sergeants, inspectors, and chief inspectors in all matters affecting their welfare and efficiency. It maintains a local presence through 43 federated branches, one for each police force in the region.
The Federation operates entirely independently, controlled by serving police officers and free from affiliation with external bodies or political parties. It campaigns to secure fair financial, legal and professional treatment for members, whilst working to influence decision-makers at both local and national levels on policing matters.
The organisation provides members with direct support services including free legal advice and assistance, group insurance schemes, mental health support, and wellbeing resources. These services complement its broader advocacy work on behalf of the rank-and-file officers it represents.
