RIHousing is Rhode Island's housing finance agency, founded in 1973. It operates as a self-sustaining corporation that receives no state funding for its operations, maintaining financial independence while fulfilling its public mission of ensuring affordable, safe, and healthy housing for people who live and work in the state. The agency collaborates with developers, municipalities, community partners, and a network of approved lenders.
The agency provides a comprehensive suite of services including loans, grants, education, and direct assistance to help Rhode Islanders find, rent, buy, build, and maintain quality housing. It administers the Housing Choice Voucher Program, providing more than 1,400 vouchers for rental assistance, and oversees approximately 15,000 affordable apartments statewide. For first-time homebuyers, RIHousing supports mortgage programs, down payment assistance, and homebuyer education.
For more than 50 years, RIHousing has operated exclusively within Rhode Island, serving the housing finance, affordable housing, and public housing administration sectors. Its focus on a single state allows concentrated engagement with local housing needs and partnerships.
