TechnoServe Inc. is a nonprofit organisation founded in 1968 that works to reduce poverty in low-income communities by building viable businesses rather than providing conventional aid. Operating across 29 countries with a staff of more than 1,500, it delivers practical business training, market access, and enterprise support to smallholder farmers, food processors, and micro-retailers.
The organisation's programmes span several distinct areas:
- Smallholder farmer training: Direct, sector-specific support to help farmers build competitive enterprises and raise incomes. In East Africa, coffee farmers supported by TechnoServe reported income increases of 142%.
- Food processor support: Targeted assistance to strengthen the competitiveness and operational capacity of food processing businesses.
- Small business and micro-retailer support: Help for informal and small-scale businesses to formalise and grow, including programmes in Kenya.
- Monitoring, evaluation, and transparency: Rigorous tracking and public reporting of programme results, with stated accountability to both donors and the communities served.
TechnoServe's operating philosophy rests on the premise that people in low-income communities can exit poverty when given access to skills, markets, and capital - rather than dependency on assistance. The organisation emphasises data-driven decision-making, transparency, and partnership over paternalism. It has operated for more than 50 years across Africa, Latin America, and Asia.
